Watch how Urchin Baits with Super Baitlock and a single hook swims with different Super Baitlock weights.

Rigging Side Saddle

In a lot of our applications, we’re placing the hook completely outside of the bait, and we’re calling that Side Saddle.

Side Saddle rigging gives you the ability to use smaller hooks (you’re not closing the gap with bait), skin-hook the point for a snag-resistant presentation, and precise control over where the Super Baitlock and weight sit and where the line pulls. That control changes how the bait moves and sits in the water, and frees up the hook for a cleaner set on the fish.

With a regular jig head or weighted hook you’re locked into the hook size, the amount of weight, and where that weight sits on the bait. Nothing lets you change the weight or the swim action as quickly and economically as the Super Baitlock.

A minnow with the weight centered swims with a natural, balanced action instead of spinning or flopping. A crayfish weighted from the bottom stands upright with its claws raised, looking defensive and alive. You can also create a nose-down fall, a slow glide, or a bait that stays pinned in place while still looking natural. The Super Baitlock locks everything in so the weight and hook stay exactly where you put them.

How to rig Side Saddle:

  1. Decide where you want the line to pull from (nose, middle, or tail).
  2. Insert the hook at that point and pull it all the way through the bait so both the hook and line come free.
  3. Insert the Super Baitlock at the spot you want the weight or pivot point (center of a minnow, underside of a crayfish, etc.).
  4. Insert the hook through the hole of the Baitlock stem closest to the side of the bait, then trim off any excess if desired.
  5. Pull the line taut so the hook lies flat against the bait, and skin-hook the point for weed-resistance.

The result is a bait that acts exactly the way you want it to.

Go fish.
